BA´ALAH (bāʹa-lā; “mistress”).
1. A city on the northern border of the tribe of Judah (Josh. 15:10), one of the religious sanctuaries of the ancient Gibeonites, as it appears (15:9) that Baalah and Kiriath-jearim were applicable to the same place. See 1 Chron. 13:6.
2. A city on the S of Judah (Josh. 15:29). Called Balah (19:3); also Bilhah (1 Chron. 4:29).
3. A mountain on the NW boundary of Judah, between Shikkeron and Jabneel (Josh. 15:11), usually regarded as the same as Mt. Jearim.

Baalah (bayʹuh-luh), a feminine form of the word baal (Heb., ‘master’), the name of the Semitic fertility god; it is used to mean ‘the place of Baal.’ 1 Another name for Kiriath-jearim, a city on the northern border of Judah (Josh. 15:9-10) where David kept the Ark of the Covenant before moving it to Jerusalem (1 Chron. 13:6). The site is identified as modern Deir el-Azar or Tel Qiryat Yearim, about eight miles west and slightly north of Jerusalem. Baalah is also called Kiriath-baal (Heb., ‘the city of Baal,’ Josh. 15:60) and Baale-Judah (2 Sam. 6:2). 2 A city on the southern border of Judah, possibly the same one elsewhere called Balah (Josh. 19:3) and Bilhah (1 Chron. 4:29) and given to the tribe of Simeon. The site is not known. 3 A mountain on the northern border of Judah near Ekron (Josh. 15:11). See also Kiriath-jearim. D.R.B.
