Aaronites

Aaronites

1:
Aaronites —  the descendants of Aaron, and therefore priests. Jehoiada, the father of Benaiah, led 3,700 Aaronites as “fighting men” to the support of David at Hebron (1 Chr. 12:27). Eleazar (Num. 3:32), and at a later period Zadok (1 Chr. 27:17), was their chief.

2:
AARONITES* Collective name for the priests who descended from Aaron through his sons Eleazar and Ithamar. The term is used twice in the kjv to refer to the 3,700 men who supported David against Saul (1 Chr 12:27) and of whom Zadok later became leader (1 Chr 27:17). Both “house of Aaron” (Pss 115:10, 12; 118:3; 135:19) and “Aaron” (1 Chr 27:17, rsv) are used to refer to the Aaronites.

AAR´ONITE. Descendants of Aaron, and therefore priests, who to the number of 3,700 fighting men under Jehoiada joined David at Hebron (1 Chron. 12:27). Later we find that their leader was Zadok (27:17).

4:
Aaronites (airʹuh-nīts), a term equivalent to ‘sons of Aaron’ (Lev. 1:7) or ‘house of Aaron’ (Ps. 115:10), indicating the postexilic view that the whole priesthood was descended from Aaron. It was divided into twenty-four families, each serving in the Temple for a week, sixteen claiming descent from Aaron’s elder son Zadok and eight from his younger son Ithamar (1 Chron. 24:1-19). Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, was a member of such a division of priests (Luke 1:5, 8-9). See also Aaron; Priests.
