Kadmiel

Kadmiel

1:
KADMIEL (PERSON) [Heb qadmı̂˒ēl (קַדְמִיאֵל)]. A Levite associated with various activities during and following the return from Exile, although it has been suggested that the name appears primarily as a designation of a levitical family (Brockington Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther NCBC, 60). Concerning the return itself, Kadmiel made his way to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:40; Neh 7:43; 12:8; 1 Esdr 5:26). Though the genealogical records in this case are somewhat unclear (Myers Ezra, Nehemiah AB, 13), he was one of only a few Levites who did so (Williamson Ezra, Nehemiah WBC, 35). In helping to establish the postexilic community, Kadmiel served in a supervisory role during the rebuilding of the temple (Ezra 3:9; 1 Esdr 5:58), led worship in the public ceremonies prior to the establishment of the new covenant (Neh 9:4), and supported this covenant by “sealing” it (Neh 10:10—Eng 10:10). Finally, in an appended list in Nehemiah, Kadmiel is characterized as a man of praise and thanksgiving (Neh 12:24).

KAD´MIEL (kadʹmi-el; “God is in the front”).
1. One of the Levites who, with his family, returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. Apparently he was a representative of the descendants of Hodaviah, or, as he is elsewhere called, Hodevah or Judah (Ezra 2:40; Neh. 7:43; 12:8, 24). He assisted in the various reforms of that period (Ezra 3:9), 536 b.c.
2. A Levite who assisted in leading the devotions of the people after they were taught the law by Ezra (Neh. 9:4–5). He also signed the covenant (10:9), 445 b.c. He is thought to have been a son of no. 1.

KADMIEL (Heb. qaḏmı̂’ēl, ‘God/El is the first/ ancient one’). A Levite who returned with Zerubbabel (Ezr. 2:40; Ne. 7:43; 12:8, 24), and was concerned with the commencement of the Temple rebuilding (Ezr. 3:9), with the day of national repentance (Ne. 9:4–5) and with the sealing of the covenant (Ne. 10:9). L. H. Brockington (Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther, NCB, 1969) suggests that the name appears mainly, if not entirely, limited to the designation of a levitical family.  j.g.g.n.
